Waxing Nostalgic: Today's General Hospital Broke my Heart a Little

Holy crap. Starting with Jax/Brender's wedding at the Q's...it was just SO wonderful to see my old GH on screen. I miss so many of the characters, so much of the character interaction...it's just beyond words. I even had trouble tweeting about it all. Little Amber Tamblyn was hysterical!! So young. Dara, Mike..Nedly!! Then, MIRANDAHhhhhhhh walks  in with Sonny.  "Mrs.Jasper Jacks"-- thud. They even had the old spots in between the show before the commercials!! The Q mansion looked like a mansion. Kat Bell and Mac Daddy!! WIRE MENTION!! RUBY...Ruby, Ruby. Wow. And not only that, sitting next to  Lucy.

NEXT EPPY:
Venus!! Venus!! Jason is  still taking care of Brenda too. LOL.  The time he left her at the altar. Tons of Flashbacks.  The whole Puerto Rican NON-CGI real life location shoot. Brenda and the shattering glass shower-scene. AND THE WIRE scene!! Second best GH scene ever in my lifetime.
Kat Bell  at a really spooky looking Wyndemere--and NLG walks in. LOL I miss that Wyndemere. All we get now is that dang office/den thing. NLG and SN were so good together. I forgot all about Kat Bell maybe being his sister!!
Loved the back of the limo with Sonny and Jason... such fantastical stuff. Jason: "She hates me too"... Sonny: "I don't care"...

Episode Three:  Jason/Brender Vegas sheeze. Lila's face. heh-- Reggie!! Love Brenda and the Q's
Tam Braun is on!! And Jax has the most blonde hair ever..and there's Skye. Courtney-- ah. Daisy the Stripper.
This whole eppy was mostly comedy...  Judy Tenuta. Cute..and I guess fun. I still liked the first 2  best.

Wow... I  didn't think i'd get this upset over watching the show I used to love. My stomach even hurts a little! LOL. Now you know I'm a REAL SOAP lover. I'm mental. The writing was so wonderful. I didn't even mind they cut them down for the Maurice/Vanny interviews or the "What If" stuff. This was GH back when stories had a beginning, a middle and an ending. Back when the families were the focus. Back before block taping. sniff.

The glaring thing about all this?? Both AMC and OLTL could do a history/character show and still  have most of it's infrastructure in place. GH is a SHELL of it's former self. A DAMN SHELL. Today proved it. I so miss the show I loved.

  1. that was painful to read. i remember most that stuff too. i have dozens of GH from the early 2000s and it's so sad at how much it's changed. unrecognizable really. :(

  3. Oh how I miss GH of old...

Even the flashback/montage of the Brenda/Sonny relationship was really well done. Now, you have music and nothing of importance. Actually getting to hear some of the dialogue allowed us to see why the pairing was so exciting.

Now when a pairing is done, there is no homage paid to that pairing or fanbase. Though some don't really deserve one or didn't have a significant impact, there should still be some acknowledgement that the pairing existed. Play out the emotions and pain that one goes through after a break up. Show the awkwardness of when you first see the other person after the break up. Show us the hurt, struggle to cope with the loss. Give us the emotions. Gives us the connection. LET THEM INTERACT!!!! Now, it's like, if the pairing is no longer the story being told, it doesn't and/or didn't exist at all.

Seeing all those old characters was amazing and heartbreaking at the same time. Imagine bringing back Lucy Coe and having her work with Kate Howard! There's an idea, how about making a connection with Lucy and Kate? Kate worked with Lucy when she was up and coming in the business. Have Brenda work with them too.

So much potential just floundering in the proverbial airwaves.

It pains me to watch what is being forced down our throats now.

Oh how I miss GH of old...

  6. I LOVED today. I knew I missed the old, real GH but I didn't realize how much until this afternoon.

  7. I love and miss rich and textured GH, with families, loyalties and character driven stories (where we always recognized who we saw -- aka not randomly changed for plot points)

Could it be that this attempt to bring people in and remind them of Brenda's story could backfire. Seeing the contrast between three episodes of well written GH followed by block taping and random stories will wake them up to what the fans have been complaining about.

BTW..thanks for the picture of Jax and Brenda :-)

  8. What's your favorite GH scene, if the wire scene is #2? If you've said it before I don't remember. Maybe when Tony listened to Maxie's heart after the transplant? Or when Stone regained his sight right before he passed away and saw Robin as an angel? Both of those were Claire Labine, of course, as was the wire scene.

Guza was only listed as headwriter on the last of today's shows, and that was with Pratt. I'm actually impressed they selected two shows he didn't write to air today.

  9. Just watching the old opening credits had me reaching for the kleenex. It was nice to walk down memory lane but 3 hours was a bit too long for my taste.

  10. Loved the opening credits too! Everyone looked so young.
My favorite Sonny/Brenda scene is when they are in the rain and he breaks it off with Brenda for good....You saw Sonny's heart splattered all over the ground when he had to tell Brenda that. Boy, I hated Lily back then!
Since Sonny and Brenda were the reason i first started watching Gh, I can say that that might be my favorite scene of all time.
Anytime someone gives Carly a taste of her own medicine is my second favorite.

  11. Those episodes, especially the first two were so much better than what we get now. And while high definition can sometimes look good there is something about the old soft focus way of filming soaps that worked better. Its more romantic I guess.

Sonny and Brenda were definately a lot better than any of Sonny's recent pairings.

Jason looked so different and so much scrawnier. Now he's so much more bulky and muscular.

It was also nice seeing Skye. She looked gorgeous.

  12. does anyone know if those episodes will be put on hulu or abc.com? i wasn't able to see them, and i don't have dvr or a vcr for that matter.

  13. Yesterday just reaffirmed in me how bad and poorly written GH has become. Why don't TPTB take a look at those 3 episodes they showed yesterday and say back to the old way? Get rid of Brian Fronz, the writers starting with Mr. GUZA Jr. and anyone else that has brought GH to the low levels they are now. Can't we start a petition for this?

  14. I watched all 3 and enjoyed them all. That was when 'GH was great.
Just watching the opening credits made my heart jump, looking at all the talent GH used instead of all this mobular non-sense. Oh how I long for the good old days!!!
Thought of you Karen, wondering what you would have to say and I agree with every point. Even the Jason/Brenda wedding was a hoot. No laughs like that with Guza in charge.

  15. Here's a little tidbit of information not many people know about it. Miranda was supposed to turn out to be Helena's daughter. They had several almost run in's but never saw each other face to face, sort of like when Katherine and Stefan when they were putting them together.

  16. started watching GH in 1963 ... quit about two years ago after waiting ... and waiting ... and waiting for guza to wise up.

those three episodes made me certain i did the right thing. the characters, the plots and the writing were so much more fun.

cant believe how they've made mac a moron and dumbed down jax. ... and so, so, so many characters just disappear.

Seen OLTL since Day One. if it weren't think i'd toss my TV
