Tristan Rogers on Daytime TV and Outster of Guza

Well, hold on to your collective hats when you read this posting by Tristan Rogers who played Robert Scorpio for years on GH. He's not very positive on General Hospital's survival that's for sure. He also dishes heavily on the genre's future and gives insight to inner workings.
Like I said before along with others, scripted daytime soaps are going to have to find a whole new home to survive.

excerpt:
I have commented before that the demise of ABC Daytime has been on the table since the eighties. It was never a case of “if” but always “when”. And now it’s happening. What will happen and can it be reversed? IMO not at a Network level. The shows could/might be picked up by someone else and re-engineered. Cost is a major factor to be addressed and so is the overall way the shows are structured and managed. Daytime has been stuck in a time warp since the early eighties and needs to be completely re-invented. It needs to look at how prime soaps have evolved and try to grasp why Reality shows are so strong and learn something from them.

  1. Wow Karen! Fantastic article!I was particularly noting that Tristan said Guza definately and obviously did not act alone in dismantling the legacies of the show. He was most certainly given the go-ahead by higher ups.I wish he could name them. He was pretty scathing on the mob storyline ( "bargain basement criminals , LOL :) ). I was also really loved when he talked about the dismantling of storyline as going back since 2006.
There are actually very few actors left on this show. I was struck by him saying what we all know, that Guza has very little respect for women.
On ravenbeauty's site a poster responded to her latest spoilers by telling her they are someone on the inside of a show. They said she is so right and implied that there would be some unbelievable shakeups and then filming would be done. I'm thinking GH has even less time than we think.

  2. I think GH is done as well and we can't save it. It's sad but it's been in the wind forever. We tried to save it years ago. I disagree a bit with Tristan about the writing. OLTL even with no budget and no PR and crap thrown at it manages to write a damn good show day to day.

  3. I think so too Karen. It's not just a Cliffhanger Friday show.It even gives AMC a run for its money. But I think its soaps in general remember Days firing of John and Marlena. They too have gone in the crapper as far as writing is concerned.I watched Tristen some the other day hes a true actor in ever sense.

  4. As long as I can remember, Tristan has been a negative person with never a decent thing to say about soaps. Even when he was a 'star' on GH, and really, who heard of him before GH? This kind of never ending negativity has really hurt soaps over the years...

  5. Mamaspat: Days is returning to its vets though. Vivian and Kate are still on, as well as Carolyn, Maggie, Bo and Hope, Victor, Stefano. With the return of Carly, Justin, Adrienne,Jennifer and now Jack, Days is at least learning what us viewers want to see. Many of the newer characters have ties to Salem and they are on for a reason.

  7. What an intelligent insight into the business. I must admit I have VERY fond memories of GH in the 80s with Luke & Laura, and Robert & Anna, (and later Lucy and Kevin). As a teenager I'd run home to try to watch GH. I had stopped watching about 15 years ago (occassionally checking in) and came back more reg when Vanessa came back. It's been a bit of a waste of time - some horrible writing (and such slow pacing, ughhh).
