BREAKING NEWS: ABC Cans BOTH AMC and OLTL!!

Read it and weep. Both Michael Ausiello and TV Guide report that ABC is canceling both All My Children and One Life to Live. I can't even type this without shaking. The shows that are replacing them will be "The Chew" (I am not making that up) and "The Revolution". I don't even want to write what they will be about because frankly, I won't be watching.

After months of speculation, there you have it. Soaps are pretty much dead. I can't write much more.

  3. I know it would be kind of stupid (but look at who we're dealing with)...but could this be a Becky Herbst-style ploy on the part of ABC?

If not, surely there's something we could do...if not for AMC then for OLTL...

  4. CW is the answer. They have lower rating standards and it would give them a whole new base....

  5. I don't even watch these two soaps and I want to cry.

  6. Very very sad. Who wants more talk/reality shows? I never really thought this day would come...

  7. The news has literally crashed Daytime Confidential's site. Can't even get the site to load.

  8. This is devastating news..and the shows they're being replaced with..are you KIDDING me??? OLTL is the best soap ABC has!

  9. No, the media kits are already out for the other shows. This was a done deal awhile ago.

  10. This is terrible. I wish Oprah would take them onto her network. How many episodes of Say Yes to the Dress to people need to see? Not to mention other repeats currently on OWN.

I'm certain GH is not far behind.

  11. Sad, sad day.

I imagine GH is lucky if it has another year.

  12. This makes me sooo sick OLTL kicks GH's butt as far as writing.ABC sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. I am just disgusted with ABC right now. The world does not need 2 more talk shows to replace what little escapism soap lovers have. I think we all deal with "reality" enough and 3 small hours of soaps isn't much to ask from a network. Top it off by the fact that they straight up LIED to the AMC cast last month it is deplorable. I don't watch AMC but I feel sick for their cast and crew. There was no reason to lie to those people then turn around and cancel them 30 days later.

I will continue to DVR GH once OLTL is gone(because really, I do need something to fill 15 minutes of my day while I FF through Guza's crap) but I will not give any of their other daytime programming a single second of ratings. I am going to take a hard look at the prime time shows I watch on ABC as well. I'm going to either cut it down greatly or I am going to watch online where they won't get my ratings.

  14. this is terrible oltl is the best soap on abc. GH is next.

  15. Well, it has been rumored forever and now it has happened. Days will be the only soap opera on my DVR now.
It's sad to know that at any day we can lose Soap Opera's to shows that probably won't last a year. Once upon a time Soap's were the bread and butter of daytime.
I just can't think right now. I guess my DVR will be more empty because I would rather watch round the clock episodes of Everybody Loves Raymond before all these reality shows....

  16. So Sad, I'm sure Gh won't be on much longer.

  17. This is of course going to have the snowball effect of further killing GH's ratings. In the past, I think poeple used to watch OLTL because they were waiting for GH to come on. That is how I originally started watching, while I was on maternity leave 8 years ago. Now, I think people have GH on their tv just because they don't bother to turn it off or to change the channel after OL ends...Anyway, not that it will do any good, but I say we all bury the idiots at ABC and Disney in snail mail, e-mails and tweets just to let them know how stupid this decision is. I feel bad for the cast and crew at AMC, but I am furious about OLTL- it is the best soap on television! Karen, can you provide us with addresses again?

  18. I have always been part of the GH famliy, but the residents of Pine Valley and Llandview were like the good neighbors that I always turned to when PC got trite or boring.
    This one hurts!
The memories: Jessie and Angie - Jessie's dead Jessie's dead!...That scene would rip anyones heart out
Eric Cane - comedy, drama, or camp - Susan Lucci could pull it all off
Tad the Cad with Eliza and her mom - LOL
Vicki/Niki!!! Judith FREAKING Light just blowing up on the witness stand...Marco Dane always on the take. MITCH THE NUTTER - nobody else ever did it better on daytime than Rosco Born.
I think I am going to cry

  20. ABC can pound sand! Frons says everyone who watches soaps is out working so who is it that's home and is going to watch his lifestyle programming? So much bs...bottom line it will cost next to nothing to air. I don't see GH lasting much longer. There's already lots of that type of programming I don't watch. It will be easy to not watch his too.

  21. Honestly ladies (and if there are any fellas here), I think Love4dogs might be on to something. It's pretty apparent that the big O is a fan of soaps (she doesn't really feature things on her show that she doesn't like). AND...she does have a network that needs programming.

Perhaps energy should be directed that way? (In between cursing the ground that Frons/Phelps/Guza walk on, of course...)

  22. I'm not sure, but I think the problem with Oprah or any basic cable network, or even the CW, is that a 5-day-a-week soap isn't cheap. That's why reality shows are so attractive to networks, because they are much cheaper and can sometimes gather equal or higher ratings. Maybe if some kind of shortened schedule could happen, like three or four days a week, reduced cast, additional weeks off - maybe then there could be some hope. Otherwise I think it is doubtful.

I heard about this from, of all things, Pardon The Interruption on ESPN. They actually brought it up in their closing segment.

I'm just sick about it. I've never followed AMC, but OLTL I watched for years in the 1980's, and I started watching it again when I started reading this site. Such a wonderful, entertaining show.

  23. I just saw this on our abc news channel. They're news website posted this information..... Don't agree with the cancelations? Call 818 460-7477 or email: abc.audience.relations@abc.com. Guess we better let them know what's on our minds. This just stinks. :(

  24. I don't think Oprah would go into the biz of soaps because they are SO SO expensive-- and there's no syndication in them. But, MAYBE. She does love AMC. It would drive viewers to her channel.

  25. Thanks for putting the address up there even though it probably won't help.

This is what I sent them.

I could understand if yall wanted to cancell General Hospital because it is crap writing. But to get rid of the best soap opera OLTL trust me I will just go to NBC and all the shows I watched on ABC I will boycott. From Modern Family to Greys Anatomy so let the ax fall so shall the viewers

  26. Okay The web address annon listed came back to me Karen can you list the web address.

  27. Mamaspat Ole, I sent an e-mail to that address and it did not come back to me. Are you sure you typed it in correctly? This is what I wrote:

The decision to cancel One Life to Live is the wrong decision to make. I think you are going to find that this decision is going to hurt ABC in the long run. I began watching OLTL 8 years ago while on maternity leave. At that time, I watched it as a lead in to General Hospital, which I had watched since a teenager I now watch OLTL because it is the best soap opera on television, and I was watching GH only because I kept the television on after OLTL ended. I stopped watching GH after the Jake debacle- the actors were spectacular, the writing was horrible and had been horrible for so long that I could no longer continue watching, hoping that things would change. I think you are going to find that I was not the only person that watched GH because it came on after OLTL, and you are going to see GH's ratings take a nose dive after OL ends.

Soap fans are a very dedicated group of people. They are not going to watch the new shows you have decided to replace OLTL and AMC with. They may switch to another network, and watch a different soap. They may just turn off the television. They may decide to boycott ABC all together and not watch primetime either. I cannot make that threat, because I think the shows on ABC primetime are crap. The only show I watch on ABC at all is OLTL, which I will watch to the end. And then, I will no longer watch any show on ABC, because there will be nothing worth watching.

  31. I stopped watching GH weeks ago because of the Jake debacle.

I have been watching Y&R in anticipation for Genie's arrival in late May.

What a difference a network makes!

  34. I had to send an email to ABC even though I know it won't do any good. I am sick about this and even though I know in my heart I can't give up Castle and Grey's Anatomy, I think I can give up everything else. And TV is my life, seriously, I DVR and watch a lot of TV. Too much, but I will get so many hours of my life back! yahoo!
