We know it will. Forever a part of the General Hospital family, may he RIP. This is just devastating news. I really have pictured him living it up in Amsterdam , having coffees on the canal and loving life. I'll gather my thoughts for a bigger blog later but wanted to post now.
I'm also thinking of Genie Francis who's lost so many that were her screen partners during her first run on GH. What a horrible year.
Rest In Peace Tony!
ReplyDeleteOn social he had been looking more and more frail, so this doesn't shock me although I am deeply saddened. Geary was and IMO will always be the GOAT of the soap actors. He won 8 emmys and even when the writing was crap, would spin into something fascinating to watch. The audience knew it and his peers knew it as well...he was the best. Thank you Tony for the memories of your incredible performances as Luke and Bill...you sure as hell entertained me like no other and I will remember you well. -OldSchoolGHfan
ReplyDeleteRIP! An outstanding actor and we will always miss him!
ReplyDeletePoor Genie. She must be grieving all year long
ReplyDeleteThe first thing that came to mind when I heard this was the old intro where all the men are suited up, either standing or sitting on stools, still as hell, and they pan to the end and Tony gets up and walks off camera. He truly was one of a kind.
ReplyDeleteAn entire legion of soap fans were "discovered" when he joined the show and captivated audiences with his off-beat anti-hero leading man. There was no one like him and no one like him ever since. It's shocking and sad to me that so many from that era - save for Genie Francis, Kin Shriner, Jane Elliot, Kristina Wagner and Finola Hughes - are all now gone and all within just such a short window of time. I'm glad Tony went out from GH on his terms and that he seemed to love living in Amsterdam. I'm so glad Genie is still an important part of the show. Who would believe back then that one day we'd be watching a show with Genie Francis' Laura as the matriarch.
ReplyDeleteTony Geary was the sole reason I began watching "GH" so many decades ago. I tuned in to see what all the Luke and Laura hype was about and was immediately captivated by Tony's performance. He was a consummate actor, IMO.
ReplyDeletePerhaps more importantly, Tony managed to make an anti-hero beloved by daytime audiences. Nowadays, series on cable and streaming feature plenty of flawed characters as the lead, but back then it was rare if not unheard of. Even when Luke had sub-par material to play, Tony made it fun to watch.
RIP, Tony Geary.
Also, if you haven't seen it yet, check out what Genie Francis posted on social media. It's quite a touching, heartfelt tribute.
